Here's a brief history of plastic through the ages. We have always used plastics but it was originally in the form of cellulose (a polymer) in the walls of plant cells. Therefore, as long as we have used wood, we have used plastics.
However, we will be talking about when common plastics were found and put into use. 1870 - A version of plastic (celloid) was created by the Hyatt brothers for the film industry 1907- First synthetic plastic by Leo Baekeland
1929 - Styrofoam & Polyester polystyrene was created (styrofoam). polyester was created.
1963 - Celloplast is used for some grocery store packaging.
1980 - Plastic grocery bags are introduced to America.
1985 - 75% of grocery stores use plastic bags
2018 - We have a problem… Plastic! It's evident that we have an issue, not only in out community but in the rest of the world. It's time we try to shift away from the dangerous practices we are used to. Check out our post on alternatives for helpful ways to shift away from plastics.
