Statewide Polystyrene Ban

Updated: Jun 13, 2019

"Polystyrene cannot be recycled like a lot of other products, so while that cup of coffee may be finished, the Styrofoam cup it was in is not" - Janet Mills

Polystyrene food containers were banned in Maine as of May 1st! The ban which goes into effect January 2021 is a big step in the right direction!

While many states have plastic bag bans Maine is the first to have a polystyrene ban. While it isn't official it sounds like many people at the state house want to move forward with plastic bag bans as well.

Statewide bans really emphasize the urgency and importance of moving to more sustainable products. Not only that but it helps deal with a big problem we ran into when talking to local businesses. Many small businesses said that they were afraid that they would lose business to neighboring towns because of the ban. If this ban is statewide the fear of that is significantly lessened!

Let's hope we can see more of this positive change in the future!
